"New Madrid" Nuttall Oak — Quercus nuttallii 'New Madrid'
"New Madrid" produces colorful spring foliage of red and purple from mid April to mid May. Found in the most northern part of the range in Illinois, ‘New Madrid’ is from a large mature tree found by Guy Sternberg of Starhill Forest. The color on the newly emerging foliage plus its deep green color throughout the summer and its scarlet fall color make a great ornamental oak. These characteristics come true from seed. Nuttall oak has done well here in Michigan. It is a very vigorous red oak reaching 25 ft. tall in 15 years. Tolerant to wet and dry soil. Height and width to 60 ft. Hardiness -20 °F.
